Her hippie upbringing a result of her parents' escape from Communist rule in Czechoslovakia, her mother is an artist, her late father an architect. Kelton's great-grandfather, Josef Fanta, designed the Central Railway Station in Prague, and, after the Velvet Revolution, her great-aunt Dagmar Hochova, a renowned photographer in Prague, was asked to join parliament by her playwright friend, then-president Vaclav Havel. Kate's aunt and uncle, Eve and Fred Fishell, started the Canadian branch of MENSA at Expo '67, with her mother following to settle in Toronto with Kate when she was 7. She attended various lauded brainer and art schools, majoring in visual arts and minoring in directing, at her 'Fame'-like highschool, the Etobicoke School of the Arts. Turning down the University of Toronto's offer of admission to their Architecture program, she got her degree, a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Film, from Toronto's Ryerson Polytechnic University, having minored in philosophy, psychology and sociology. After graduating, Kelton exhibited her artwork in various venues throughout Toronto and Montreal, including the venerated Hummingbird Center for the National Ballet of Canada. Initially working in illustration, styling and production design, it wasn't long before she jumped into the fray on the other side of the camera, with a world-wide commercial campaign that featured her as the world's first, non-blonde 'Tic Tac girl'. She has shot films, music videos and print campaigns in Toronto, France, Ireland, California, New York, and Hawaii, relishing the echoes to an upbringing that had brought her to the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Portugal, and the Canary Islands. hide |
