George Kuffs just lost his job, and his girlfriend who is still in college is pregnant. Since he can’t see how he can support her, he thinks she is better off without him. So he visits his elder brother, Brad, to squeeze him for a loan so he can go to Brazil where there’s a gold-rush going on. Unfortunately Brad is killed and George is suddenly the owner of Brad’s “patrol special” district.

After a series of ill-fated relationships, Jane (Ashley Judd) has finally met Mr. Right, Ray (Greg Kinnear) - he’s emotionally available, and not afraid of commitment. Six weeks into their blissful courtship, he asks her to move in with him, and they start looking at apartments. But little by little Ray starts to pull away, until Jane realizes that once again she’s been dumped. Desperate to understand what happened and get over Ray, Jane comes up with a theory of interpreting male-female relations by observing the behaviors of wild animals. She shares this idea with a friend who works at a men’s magazine (Marisa Tomei) and is given an anonymous editorial column devoted solely to her thoughts on the matter. But no one could have predicted the chord she’d strike among women with her theory, and the column’s wild success makes Jane start to question her conclusions - and opens her eyes to what might be right in front of her.

Crossing Over is a multi-character canvas about immigrants of different nationalities struggling to achieve legal status in Los Angeles. The film deals with the border, document fraud, the asylum and green card process, work-site enforcement, naturalization, the office of counter terrorism and the clash of cultures.
