show all Nelson Carvajal, the oldest son of Maria Hernandez and Nelson G. Carvajal, was born and raised on the north side of Chicago, Illinois. From the early age of 8 Nelson immersed himself in film - whether it was reading Roger Ebert in the weekly Chicago Sun-Times (obviously as Nelson grew older, the reviews became more accessible) or staying up late watching old VHS tapes of "Goodfellas" and "Ordinary People," it was apparent that this young individual was in love with movies. By the time Nelson hit junior high many family and friends would refer to him as the "film guy" at school events and family gatherings. During his four years at Chicago's Lane Tech College Prep, Nelson's concentration was in Theater Tech Studies; an area that coincided with movies and gave Nelson the opportunity to direct one-act plays. In 2002 Nelson, only a junior in high school, was accepted and granted early admission into the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. When the time came though, Nelson wasn't realistically equipped to survive financially in New York (he was the first in his family to go to college), so Nelson enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. There on campus, Nelson became a freelance film critic at the university's newspaper "The Pointer" and once his enlightening reviews began to draw serious attention Nelson was offered the position of being the official film critic for the paper; Nelson's self-titled film critique columns would garner the spotlight of the Arts & Entertainment section. In May of 2007, after directing business commercials, corporate videos, documentaries and short subject narratives, Nelson graduated with a B.A. in Communication-Media & Technology, and a minor in Writing. Nelson's cinematic influences are often noted to include Paul Thomas Anderson, Sidney Lumet, Martin Scorsese and Werner Herzog. Nelson, now living back home in Chicago, is hard at work prepping future projects. [November 2007]
