The critical acclaim he won for his performance as Leo Hubbard in the Broadway production of "The Little Foxes" lead to his appearance in the film version, in the same role.

This film adaptation of the ‘Lillian Hellman’ (qv) play depicts a post-Civil War southern community where nothing is more important than money and power to Regina Giddens (’Bette Davis’ (qv)). In order to join her equally ruthless brothers in a scheme that is sure to gain her wealth and power, she uses her young, naïve daughter to fetch her estranged, ailing husband who is living elsewhere. When she cannot convince her husband to give her the money, she sets forward a cunning plan which escalates.

The workers on the railroad haven’t been paid in months — that’s because Whitey and his gang, including fast-shooting, dangerous, but likeable Utica Kid, keep holding up the train for its payroll. Grant McLaine, a former railroad employee who was fired in disgrace, is recruited to take the payroll through under cover. A young boy and a shoebox figure into the plot when Whitey’s gang tries to hold up the train and Grant and the Kid meet again to settle an old score.
