This film adaptation of the ‘Lillian Hellman’ (qv) play depicts a post-Civil War southern community where nothing is more important than money and power to Regina Giddens (’Bette Davis’ (qv)). In order to join her equally ruthless brothers in a scheme that is sure to gain her wealth and power, she uses her young, naïve daughter to fetch her estranged, ailing husband who is living elsewhere. When she cannot convince her husband to give her the money, she sets forward a cunning plan which escalates.

A scientific expedition searching for fossils along the Amazon River discover a prehistoric Gill-Man in the legendary Black Lagoon. The explorers capture the mysterious creature, but it breaks free. The Gill-Man returns to kidnap the lovely Kay, fiancée of one of the expedition, with whom it has fallen in love.

John Putnam and Ellen watch a great fireball going down near a mine. Both are the only ones, who believe the “thing” not to be a meteor but an alien starship. Two bumbling service station attendants are left as the sole beneficiaries in a gangster’s will. Their trip to claim their fortune is sidetracked when they are stranded in a haunted house along with several other strangers.

A well-known judge has become a fugitive from the police, with a large reward on his head. A reporter believes that the judge is hiding in a private sanitarium, so she seeks out a private investigator and asks him to pretend to be insane, so that he can get inside the sanitarium and look for the judge. The investigator is admitted to the asylum, and encounters many dangers while trying to prove that the judge is there.
