A writer attempting to finish her first novel seeks the wisdom of her mentor and ex-lover in hopes of overcoming a crippling case of writer’s block in writer/director Kurt Gunn’s enigmatic thriller. Marian (Carrie Preston) is writing an absurdist novel about a par of brothers living in a landlocked boat when the ideas simply stop coming. Advised that she could overcome her problem by simply killing off the protagonist, Marian discovers that task is easier said than done when the willful character escapes the pages of her book and begins wrecking havoc in her personal life.

Marine Gunnery Sergeant Tom Highway has been in the Corps since the Korean War and would like to see some action and a victory before he retires. He requests to be transfered to the unit that he was once busted out of. Upon arriving the commanding officer knows of Highway’s reputation, especially of his lack of respect for his superiors, warns him that he is going to keep an eye on him. Highway’s assigned to train a recon unit which consists mostly of deadbeats. But Highway’s determined to turn them into true marines and they are not exactly pleased with him, at first. And he is also trying to reconnect with his ex-wife.

College freshman John (Gib) Gibson decides to go cross country to visit his friend in California during winter break. Awaiting there is a bikini-clad babe whom his friend assures him is a “sure thing”. Meanwhile, Allison, a cute (but somewhat anal retentive) girl at Gib’s college has also decided to head out to Cal. to see her boyfriend during break. Gib and Allison are thrust together on a road trip from hell, and somewhere along the way, they find each other’s company to be tolerable. Now, what will become of Gib’s “sure thing?”
