Young Travis Coates is left to take care of the family ranch with his mother and younger brother while his father goes off on a cattle drive in the 1860’s. When a yellow mongrel comes for an uninvited stay with the family, Travis reluctantly adopts the dog. After a series of scrapes involving raccoons, snakes, bears and all manner of animals, Travis grows to love and respect Old Yeller, who comes to have a profound effect on the boy’s life.

Disney brings animated versions of 2 literary works to the screen here. The first is ‘The Adventures of Mr. Toad’, based on the characters from Kenneth Grahame’s ‘The Wind in the Willows’. The second is based on Washinton Irving’s masterpiece ‘The Headless Horseman’, in which schoolteacher Ichabod Crane, smitten with Katrina Van Tassel, attends a party hosted by her father. Town thug Brom Bones, who also has his eye on Katrina, tries to intimidate Ichabod with the chilling story of ‘The Headless Horseman’, a ghost of a soldier in the revolutionary war who lost his head in a fight. When Ichabod rides home through Sleepy Hollow late at night, he finds himself confronted by the Headless Horseman who wants Ichabod’s head for himself! Will Ichabod escape the terrifying, sword-wielding ghost….or will the Headless Horseman claim Ichabod’s head for himself?

A family in route to New Guinea is shipwrecked on a deserted tropical island. They are forced to remain on the island because of the damage to the ship and the pirates that are roaming the islands. They create a home on the island (centering around a huge treehouse) and explore the island and it’s wildlife. Plenty of adventure ensues as the family deals with issues of survival, pirates, and the brothers must learn how to live on the island with an uncertain future.

This film adaptation of the ‘Lillian Hellman’ (qv) play depicts a post-Civil War southern community where nothing is more important than money and power to Regina Giddens (’Bette Davis’ (qv)). In order to join her equally ruthless brothers in a scheme that is sure to gain her wealth and power, she uses her young, naïve daughter to fetch her estranged, ailing husband who is living elsewhere. When she cannot convince her husband to give her the money, she sets forward a cunning plan which escalates.

The second gift is a pop-up book about Brazil. Inside is Zé Carioca, who takes Donald to Brazil’s Bahia for a mix of animation and live action: the two cartoon birds sing and dance with natives. The third gift is a piñata, accompanied by Panchito. A ride on a magic serape takes the three amigos singing and dancing across Mexico. ¡Olé!

The first, and by far most memorable full-length animated feature from the Disney Studios, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” may have been superseded technically by many of the films that followed it. But its simple story of a charming little princess saved from the evil deeds of her wicked step-mother, the queen, by a group of seven adorable dwarfs made history when it was first released in December, 1937 and has since become an incomparable screen classic.

John “Scottie” Ferguson is a retired San Francisco police detective who suffers from acrophobia and Madeleine is the lady who leads him to high places. Based loosely on the career of multi-term Boston Mayor James Michael Curley, this film examines the good and evil inherent in politics and all the things that go into an election. Tracy’s uphill battle to stay in office is set against the political machinery that preyed on ethnic hatred and old-time money.

In Burgendorf, Bavaria, Mother Bernle has four sons. Franz is in the army, Johann works at the forge, Andreas tends the sheep. Joseph is riding a hay wagon with a pretty girl when some of the hay falls off, landing on the fearsome Maj. Von Stomm. Joseph runs the German-American Delicatessen with his new wife Annabelle. The reports of the first German battles with the Russians are good. So why does the postman carry a black-edged letter for Mother Bernle? When America does enter the war, Joseph enlists and meets his friend, the iceman from the deli… Times are very bad in Burgendorf. Von Stomm accuses Mother Bernle: she is the “mother of a traitor”…
