Choking Man is an intense blend of psychological drama and magical realism that encapsulates the contemporary immigrant experience in America. Jorge is a morbidly shy Ecuadorian dishwasher toiling away in a shabby Jamaica, Queens, New York diner run by Rick. He works all day long in the shadow of the ever-present Heimlich Maneuver instruction poster which hangs in the diner kitchen. From his solitary kitchen corner, Jorge gropes mutely for a bond with Amy, the newly hired Chinese waitress and even though she tries to reciprocate, the gulf that separates them may be too large. On the job he is continually tormented by his coworker Jerry and at home in his Harlem boarding, under the psychological control of his domineering ‘roomate,’ he battles his inner demons. Set in the vicinity of JFK airport, the most culturally diverse neighborhood in the world, Choking Man captures the feeling of claustrophobia and almost literal asphyxiation newcomers to America experience as they struggle to find a place and purpose in this strange land.

Can bad people be rehabilitated, or are some people just inherently bad? Should a person follow his head or his heart? Young Marty Preston (Jason Dolley) wrestles with these issues when dealing with his surly neighbor Judd Travers (Scott Wilson): a man that the entire community distrusts and who once seriously abused Marty’s dog Shiloh. Etiquette requires that Marty be civil and even neighborly with Judd, but Shiloh refuses to even cross the bridge to Judd’s property. When Judd has an automobile accident while driving drunk and then a dead body shows up in the woods, rumors run wild in town and Judd becomes the townsfolk’s prime murder suspect. Even while Marty and his friend launch their own private investigation of Judd, Marty considers whether Judd may have really changed for the better and his compassion for Judd’s chained dogs leads him to offer to help set up a fence at Judd’s place. Judd and Marty become almost friendly with one another, but the results of the boys’ investigation combined with a freak accident involving Marty’s sister will ultimately test Marty’s newfound faith in his neighbor to the extreme. Young audience members will find this sequel to Shiloh less disturbing than the original thanks to a toning down of both Judd’s attitude and his abusive behavior toward his dogs.

Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, the eighth Pokémon movie, ranks as one of the best features in this popular franchise. Director Kunihiko Yuyama and writer Hideki Sonoda sensibly keep the adventures and threats to a scale that’s appropriate for the characters. (The first movies put the world at risk, and while Ash Ketchum is a good kid, he’s not someone who can credibly save the planet.) Ash, Brock, Max, and May journey to Cameron Palace for a tournament that celebrates the valor of Prince Aaron, who saved the realm from destruction 1,000 years ago. Ash and Pikachu win, but the mischievous Mew kidnaps Pikachu, whom he’s befriended. Prince Aaron’s Pokémon companion Lucario awakens from the victor’s staff to lead Ash and the gang to the Tree of Beginning, a mountain that is also a living entity. Ash risks his life to rescue Pikachu, proving the depth of their friendship to Lucario. The film includes lots of CG effects, most of which work well with the drawn animation: the earlier Pokémon films tended to look like two different movies spliced together.
